The Great British Put Off

Posted on: April,28,2014

Laura Pickett, MA (Cantab.), Senior Private Client Solicitor at Jeromes, explains why making your Will shouldn’t be something to put off…

In all my years of practice, one theme has remained consistent: nobody wants to contemplate their own demise.  If I had put a pound in a jar every time a client remarked that they had been putting off their Will for some considerable time, I would have one large, happily jammed jar.

It is entirely understandable, of course, since there are so many other preferable things to have in one’s contemplation.  A large jam-jar full of pound coins for a start.  “The Great British Bake Off” for another: exceedingly good and doubtless able to take the credit for informing and inspiring many.

Yet nothing short of actually doing it will get your Will written, and even the inestimable Paul and Mary cannot advise you on avoiding the tax equivalent of a soggy bottom.

That, of course, is where expert Wills and estate planning advice comes in.

There are many ways in which you can leave your estate and minimise any tax due.

An experienced specialist solicitor will make it their business to understand your wishes and circumstances before providing advice tailored to you.

Our role is to inform, advise and guide you, not to inflict our own preferences or undesired complications upon you.  Ultimately your Will is yours and can be as simple or as complex as you wish.

Death and taxes are inevitable.  The irony is, the best time to address them is when they are furthest from your mind because you’re so busy enjoying life.

You can’t take it with you when you go, but you can certainly take steps to ensure you pass it to whom you wish and reduce the amount that plops into the jam-jars at HM Revenue & Customs.

For bespoke advice on Wills, tax and estate planning, please do make an appointment with one of the specialist team at Jeromes who will be happy to guide you through the process: it is truly less of an ordeal, and less expensive, than you might fear.  Baking tips subject to availability at no extra charge.
